SEASONS ON SAKHALIN
Sakhalin's climate is harsh, with short and cool summers. The main tourist season lasts from mid-June to mid-September. The best time to visit Sakhalin is in August and September: the weather is warmest, with little rain and sunny.
There are few tourists on Sakhalin during the off-season, as the rains and strong wind hamper your enjoyment of the islands' beauty. But in winter, trips are organised for fans of winter sports and extreme holidays.
Be sure to bring waterproof and warm clothing: even in summer, Sakhalin evenings are chilly.
ADMISSION
Most of Sakhalin's attractions are in the border zone. In order to access them, a border pass must be obtained.
It is possible to obtain a border pass for visiting the border zone in the Kuril and Yuzhno-Kurilsk districts on your own from the Border Department of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Sakhalin region.
TRANSPORT
The Sakhalin Oblast's transport infrastructure includes air, sea, rail, road and pipeline transport.
There are six airports in the region, including one federal airport (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) and five local airports (Okha, Nogliki, Shakhtersk, Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Mendeleevo) and Yasny (Iturup). There is a heliport in the Northern Kurils (Paramushir Island) and a heliport on Shikotan Island.
The region's maritime transport infrastructure includes 8 seaports and 11 marine terminals within their boundaries, a merchant fleet and the Vanino - Kholmsk sea-rail ferry service.
The main sea link between the island and the mainland is the Vanino - Kholmsk sea railway ferry, which has been in operation since 1973 and connects Sakhalin Island with Khabarovsk Krai. The ferry crossing provides transportation of railway wagons, cars and passengers. The seaports of Kholmsk and Korsakov are the largest public ports in the Sakhalin Oblast with year-round navigation and specialise in transhipment of economic goods.
