Sakhalin's climate is harsh, with short and cool summers. The main tourist season lasts from mid-June to mid-September. The best time to visit Sakhalin is in August and September: the weather is warmest, with little rain and sunny. There are few tourists on Sakhalin during the off-season, as the rains and strong wind hamper your enjoyment of the islands' beauty. But in winter, trips are organised for fans of winter sports and extreme holidays. Be sure to bring waterproof and warm clothing: even in summer, Sakhalin evenings are chilly.

It is possible to obtain a border pass for visiting the border zone in the Kuril and Yuzhno-Kurilsk districts on your own from the Border Department of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Sakhalin region.
